Britain ¡V
Encouraging
Gambling Operators
to Compete in
International Market |
The need for review of gambling legislation
was seen in light of what Britain's Horserace
Betting Levy Board (HBLB) called the
inability of current legislation to deal with
practical problems and issues, especially
how Internet gambling poses a threat to
Government revenues and to the levy on offcourse
bets. In the case of the HBLB, this
levy funds its achievements in improvements
of breeds and advancement of veterinary
science. The response by the Department for
Culture, Media and Sport's Review Body
was to conclude that prohibition of on-line
gambling by British consumers would be
"entirely unrealistic", and instead there was
a call for Britain to be the world leader in
on-line gambling, just as it is with other
types of gambling. Encouragement for
British gambling operators to compete in the
vast international market now goes hand in
hand with the licensing and regulations of
the Gambling Commission. The patronage
of under-regulated, non-UK gambling sites
has fallen, and the industry is said to have
sufficient flexibility to respond promptly to
any new technological advances.
