| Hong Kong |
The situation in Hong Kong is unique. All
racehorses are imported from other
countries. The reason behind the success of
the horse racing industry is that there are
numerous Jockey Club members who are
real supporters and willing to spend millions
of dollars purchasing good quality horses
from overseas. It is estimated that the
owners spend on average HK$300 million to
HK$500 million per annual importing
racehorses. More important is that Hong
Kong horse racing is run by the not-forprofit
Hong Kong Jockey Club; it is
scrupulously honest and boosts confidence
of race-goers. Hong Kong ranked third on
the turnover revenue list, but considering the
number of races held (675 races in 2001/02
season) and the population (about 7 million),
the betting turnover is astonishing.
